What's the story?
The history of California will be relived in a brief timeline with some of the most significant dates.
1535- The first person that explored California was Hernando Cortes. He led an expedition to La Paz and was able to put together a colony, but unfortunately it didn’t work out and failed.
1539- The Gulf of California is explored by Francisco de Ulloa.
1542 - The first European that explored California was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He arrived in San Diego and then later explored Catalina Islands, San Pedro, Santa Monica, and as well the Channel Islands in Santa Barbara.
1769- The first mission was introduced, that being; San Diego De Alcala and it was founded by Father Junipero Serra.
1770- Mission San Carlos Borromeo del rio
1771- Mission San Antonio de Padua; Mission San Gabriel Arcangel
1772- Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
1775- The American Revolution began due to conflicts between the thirteen colonies; Mission San Juan Capistrano
1776- Declaration of Independence. (4th of July); Mission San Francisco de Asis
1777- Mission Santa Clara de Asis
1782- Mission San Buenaventura
1783- The American Revolution ends
1786- Mission Santa Barbara
1787- La Purisima Mission
1791- Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad; Mission Santa Cruz
1797- Mission San Jose; Mission San Juan Bautista; Mission San Miguel Arcangel; Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana
1798- Mission San Luis Rey de Francia
1804- Mission Santa Ines
1812- The Russian Fur Traders established Fort Ross at the Northern side of California.
1817- Mission San Rafael Arcangel
1821- Mexico won their independence from Spain; California is part of Mexico.
1823- Mission San Francisco de Solano
1826- Mission San Francisco Solano was attacked by Native Americans.
1846- Mexican American War; U.S wins on July 9.
1848- Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is signed and therefore California becomes part of the U.S; Mexican-American war ends; Gold is discovered by James Marshall in Coloma; Gold Rush begins.
1850- California becomes the 31st state in the U.S
1869- “First westbound train arrives in San Francisco”
1882- Chinese Exclusion Act is passed
1900- Oil is discovered (Kern River)
1906- San Francisco earthquake killed thousands of people.
1911- Women right to vote.
1952- Bakersfield earthquake
1989- Bay Area earthquake of 7.1 magnitude.
1992- Two women are elected for U.S senate.
1995- eBay founded
1997- Google founded
2003- Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected for governor
2004- Ronald Reagan died
